White House Creates Proposed Framework for Combating Identity Theft
The White House recently announced the release of a comprehensive policy framework aimed at combating Internet fraud when it comes to identity theft. Called the National Strategy for Trusted Initiatives in Cyberspace (NSTIC), the framework is a set of recommendations that describes an “identity ecosystem” for promoting personal online security — specifically the consolidation of the multiple log-in credentials that consumers have for accessing online services.
White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt highlighted in a White house blog post that “No longer should individuals have to remember an ever-expanding and potentially insecure list of usernames and passwords to login into various online service.”
As a response to one of the recommendations of the broader cybersecurity plan that President Obama released last May, the framework is a result of a lengthy process of consulting with government agencies, industry leaders and public-interest groups.
