U.S. Cyber Security Report Delayed Due to Swine Flu Outbreak

uscybersecutityLast week, Melissa Hathaway, acting senior director for cyberspace for the National Security and Homeland Security councils, hinted that the administration’s review of U.S. cyber security would come out this week, and that the recent swine flu outbreak has delayed efforts to issue the entire report.

You all may recall that Hathaway and her team completed the 60-day review in mid-April, which included a review of all policy directives, executive orders, national strategies, as well as taking input from agencies. They also took feedback from industry, academia, the civil liberties and privacy communities, state and international governments, and the legislative branch.

2009 will be the year of cyber security. It’s that simple. Too many breaches have happened, too many identities have been compromised and things are being done to address it. Again, we applaud any efforts to face this issue head on. We look forward to getting our hands on the full report. Stay tuned for more details.

If the report has actually been delayed because of this very mild outbreak of flu, that does not bode well for how the federal government is prioritizing cybersecurity.
