Front Runners for “Cyber Czar” Position and 60-Day Review will be Released Tomorrow

While we are anxiously awaiting for President Obama to name the new “cyber czar” and release the findings of the 60-day review on cyber security, we thought we would share the latest news. The front runners have been named and they are Melissa Hathaway, Rod Beckstrom and Paul Kurtz.

So, who do you think the winner will be? We are betting on Hathaway, since she has already been playing the interim role. Also, big reminder that we are soliciting Three Recommendations from our readers as to how this person can best serve in this position. Don’t be shy! And remember, we will be taking these recommendations and formally presenting them to the new cyber czar.

I just don’t know where to start with Obama’s announcement of the new central cybercrime czar. Of course it’s the right move. Yet I’m worried that the Czar will only focus on threats to IT systems, will only “educate” on how technology brings risk (vs. safety), won’t address the debate over use of SSNs or other identity records, and won’t consider the upside opportunities to commerce. My recommendations: 1) work with a prioritized (research vs. anecdote) model of security threats, realizing that criminals are agnostic to use of high-tech versus low tech methods. 2) Focus on education *and* empowerment of everyday individuals. When educating consumers, spend as much time on the downside risks of technology as you do on how safety is improved through new methods. Many new technologies actually give individuals greater power to partner with banks and other companies in foiling criminals, but one-sided “education” will be largely ignored. 3) Focus on boosting commerce by addressing the age-old debate over use of personal identity records such as SSNs, which in turn will improve efforts to jointly foil criminals that profit from today’s confusion.
